It is aimed at people who want to know their voice and body better for greater possibilities of expression and well-being in everyday life, at lovers of movement, at the curious, and at performing artists, at people who use their voice in their profession...

Body and contact practices: improvisation, jamming, spontaneous singing, theatrical games, improvisation, polyphonic singing.

Voice and Contact Improvisation

Our voice and our body are the two tools we always have at our disposal to express ourselves and connect. Whether in a raw, everyday form or in an artistic form, body and voice project our inner selves outward by communicating our emotions, our thoughts, or our simple presence. Dance, theater, and singing, in particular, open spaces of freedom to the being in each of us who yearns to reveal themselves and enhance this expression.

The voice work we practice at the Roy Hart Centre has a primordial physical dimension, and that's what appealed to me as soon as I encountered this approach. I experienced, felt, and tasted that I sing with my whole body, and that's what I like to convey. We seek to bring attention back to the body, to inhabit it more fully. To create space for the voice to resonate, unfold, and take its place.

So combining voice with Contact Improvisation… It’s obvious!

In this course you will be encouraged to observe your sensations,

then to get in touch.

From a conscious and confident space, we will bring the voice to unfold.

Sensitive contact will foster trust within the group.

It will facilitate listening, openness,

the connection to the heart.

It is thus an invitation to place oneself within oneself and within the group.

The voices will gain in power, softness and sensitivity.

Singing is much more alive if it lets the voice shine through

sensitivity

of a relaxed and confident body.

What is Contact Improvisation?

This body practice with its playful and sensitive approach is born from listening and physical contact between two or more partners, it is a game of exploration of the gravitational relationship which is invented at every moment, brings centering, anchoring, balance... and above all a lot of joy! It is a magnificent way to connect deeply with oneself and to connect with the other beyond the mind. It is also a way to cultivate and strengthen our innate power and cultivate the collective body.

Why do this internship?

This course is open to anyone who is curious and will benefit both novices and experienced or professional people.

Here we will open a space where the body is encouraged to become fully involved in the expression , deploy the voice from this space and offer it the opportunity to broaden its field of creativity for vibrant and spontaneous singing .

In addition to opening the resonance spaces for the voice , contact in a fluid and improvised movement encourages the circulation of vital energy.

For singing, we seek to promote rooting and awaken the energy that will give intensity to vocal production . The contact when singing or declaiming can revive certain emotions that will color the voice with a vibrant authenticity . It is a magnificent way to meet with one's voice in improvisation as in interpretation , bringing vitality and sincerity to the text and the song!

Through contact and movement, we will gently reveal power and sensitivity, two qualities that will serve the voice and singing.

"(...)the ability to maintain a strong awareness of our whole body while producing vocal sounds can allow us to develop our ability to navigate complex situations in real life." (Roy Hart)

Natalie Hofmann

Performer, dancer, choreographer and

visual artist

Alongside studies at the École Supérieure

Fine Arts School of Marseille, she began to

different techniques and approaches to

movement: Contact-Improvisation, yoga, butoh,

contemporary dance, Body Mind Centering...

from which it brings into play cellular memory materials, beliefs, situations, as well as its own physical and emotional limits.

She draws inspiration from work with Lisa Nelson, Christophe Haleb, Deborah Hay, Julyen Hamilton, Daniel Lepkoff and Charlie Morrissey and from living in West Africa, India and Nepal where she studies ritual dances.

She continued with training in contemporary dance and choreography in Berlin (Tanzfabrik) and deepened her knowledge of Release Techniques and somatic practices. There she met Meg Stuart and worked with Keith Hennessy, Susan Klein and Bonnie Bainbridge-Cohen and immersed herself in the post-punk scene of the Berlin avant-garde.

Strong images, contrasts and ruptures, humor, risk, and coincidence are the ingredients she uses to create friction with established values. Her work questions the boundaries between dance, performance, and installation, exploring voice and video. She creates choreographic pieces and performances for stage and in-situ.

She regularly shares her practice through presentations, workshops, and training sessions in various settings (academic, community, and school). Since 2013, she has been involved in promoting Contact Improvisation in Marseille. In 2015, she founded her own company.

Delphine Cam

Singer, songwriter, composer and teacher

of voice.

Author and composer, singer in concerts and

shows for over 20 years, I am also

voice teacher inspired by an intuitive practice

singing and the pedagogical approach of the Roy Hart Center.

The involvement of the body and movement in singing

is central in improvisation as in interpretation.

As a voice teacher, my work in educational support for groups or individual sessions aims to encourage the free expression of the voice and to open spaces of musicality in order to explore and express the unique vocal creative potential of each person in connection with movement and body awareness.

My attraction to rhythm, polyphony and world music influences my musical creativity and also directs my accompaniment towards the transmission of traditional songs and group improvisation.

I have always felt like a seeker on a path to freedom. Singing, dancing and meditation are for me precious spaces through which I meet and express the wild, loving and present being that I am. Accompanying other seekers through the "work" (I prefer to say exploration) of the voice fascinates me in this, a voice that frees itself is a miracle! A voice that loves itself is a miracle, encountering the joy emanating from this process is a grace!
